There are plenty of health clubs to choose from. So how do you know what's the best choice? Here are some things you can do to make a well-informed decision:

  1. Check out the club when you'll probably exercise to be sure there's enough equipment.

  2. Determine if you'll be comfortable with the people who work out there.

  3. Look at the equipment and see if it's been upgraded and is well maintained.

  4. See if there's a wide variety of machines so you can change your exercise program if you want to.

  5. Ask about the classes they offer and whether they'll fit into your schedule.

  6. Find out what your membership entitles you to. Some have "tiered memberships" that don't give you access to everything the club offers.

  7. Learn whether or not you can put your membership on hold, if you need a specific reason, and whether you'll be charged to suspend your membership or reactivate it.

You know what you're looking for in a health club. Just remember to take the above factors into account and you won't end up stuck with a gym you don't want to use.
