Back pain can be excruciating. At minimum, it can be a constant annoyance that prevents you from doing things you enjoy. There are a number of simple exercises you can do to help decrease your pain. They're not difficult or strenuous, and most don't even require special equipment. However, consult your physician or a specialist before beginning any exercise program. They may recommend specific exercises or refer you to a physical therapist who can work with you one-on-one. In addition to exercise, there are other things you can do for relief: - Apply ice to your back on and off for 10 or 15 minutes at a time.
- If you work sitting down, try to get out of your chair periodically throughout the day and walk around a bit or do the suggested exercises.
- When you drive a long distance, be sure to get out of the car when you feel tightness in your back. Take a 10 or 15 minute break and do some simple exercises. On an airplane, it's important to leave your seat for awhile. If there's room, walk up and down the aisle.
- Investigate products that provide support for your back when you sit. Many people use a "lumbar roll," but that's just one option. Many health care professionals use electronic stimulus machines and there are small, portable ones you can buy to use at home.
Anyone who has back pain wants immediate relief. But don't do anything before speaking with a doctor. Your pain may actually increase -- and that's the last thing you want to happen.
