How Can You Cope With a Terrible Boss? PDF Print E-mail

Anyone who's ever worked has probably had the misfortune of reporting to a miserable boss. But short of changing jobs or transferring to another department, what can you do about it? Learning how to cope with the situation may be the best solution, as long as it doesn't jeopardize your health or your job. Here are some ideas that can help:

  • Maintain your professionalism at all times.
  • Don't confront your boss angrily or on the spur of the moment.
  • Let your boss know you want to have a discussion. You can provide feedback in a non-confrontational way.
  • Don't go to your bosses' superior unless you absolutely have to.
  • Protect yourself by documenting incidents that involve abusive or other types of bad behavior. If the situation becomes impossible, you can share it with HR.
  • Keep a written record of your accomplishments in case your boss tries to lay the blame on you.
  • Continue to be productive, don't find excuses to stay home, or do anything else that could affect your position with the company.
  • Although it's tempting, don't discuss the situation with your colleagues -- even if they bring it up.
  • Find a mentor who can listen and give you advice, either within your company or through an outside mentoring program.
  • Look for ways to alleviate your frustration, anger, and stress.

A bad boss will probably never change so make sure you have options. Keep your resume up-to-date, stay in touch with your contacts, and look into the possibility of a transfer.
